mid-day Interview: Shabana Azmi speaks on behaving in a lesbian film

It has been a week given Shabana Azmi wrapped adult sharpened for her purpose in a lesbian themed movie, Signature Move, set in Chicago (US). Back in Mumbai after a 13-day shoot, Shabana speaks to hitlist about a movie, radically a story of a Pakistani-American Muslim lesbian, Zaynab, played by Fawzia Mirza, (co-writer of a film), who hides dual things from her regressive mother (Shabana) — budding attribute with a Mexican-American lady and flourishing mindfulness with Lucha Libre, a form of veteran wrestling.

What finished we contend approbation to a film?
It was Fawzia Mirza’s passion and commitment. Then, since we had finished Fire earlier, we was gentle with suspicion of a lesbian film, yet in Signature Move we play a regressive mother, who does not know her daughter (Fawzia) is a lesbian. we suspicion it was unequivocally interesting.

Signature Move has a small crew, many of them women…
Yes, there was a ‘different’ kind of vibe on set. Without undermining men, since of so many women, there was a comfort level. Having pronounced that, good filmmaking is always gender-neutral. In fact, a best directors are those that have a ‘yin and yang’ change within them. we also had a superb equation with a film’s director, Jennifer Reeder.
It is critical that these stories be told.
Absolutely. Fawzia told me there is so small of a voices that are audible. Even in a US, there were dual radio shows about this film that were full of prejudice. Yet, currently here, when we tell my immature friends that we am doing such a project, they say, ‘Oh wow, so cooool!’ This is so opposite from Fire, those were such uneasy times. We see some of this change in a films too, where happy characters are some-more picturesque and not a caricatures that they were earlier.
Is Signature Move a festival film, or dictated for theatres?
Oh, we consider it will be embraced by festivals first, though be shown during theatres too. It has really good certification and mentored by Tribeca Films. It is not only a means kind of film; it is entertaining, has a lot of humour and there are heavyweight names behind a project. Eventually, we wish it comes to India, post the release, that should be Mar subsequent year.
What is Lucha Libre wrestling?
Lucha Libre, that literally means giveaway fight, is a form of veteran wrestling that originated in Mexico. It is characterised by wrestlers wearing charming masks, with fast sequences of binds and manoeuvres.
