Days after mid-day reported that Nandita Das was penetrating to have Saadat Hasan Manto’s daughters — Nighat Patel, Nuzhat Arshad and Nusrat Jalal — by her side during a India premiere of Manto, a director’s wish has been realised. Jalal and Arshad landed in Mumbai on Saturday, giving them adequate time to bond with actors Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Rasika Dugal, who play Manto and mother Safia in a biopic.

Talking to mid-day, Dugal says that Das had a singular design for their Sunday tour — to familiarize a daughters with a city that Manto lived in and loved. “Nandita took them on a travel in town, display them places that their relatives used to revisit often. Nusrat aapa and Shahid saab [her husband] were changed by a gesture,” says Dugal, adding that an dusk during a city’s much-loved theatre, Prithvi, was usually fitting, given that they have hereditary their father’s adore for art.

“We sat in a cafe, articulate about cinema, theatre, and of course, Manto and Safia! We even went to a bookstore and bought a collection of Manto’s essays.”

Dugal also hosted a cooking in their honour. “Nandita, Nawaz and we had cooking with a family where Saeed sahab [a common crony of a Manto family and Das] review out a pleasing illusory square he had created about Nandita assembly Manto.”

After a Mumbai premiere final night, a daughters will attend a biopic’s Delhi premiere tomorrow.
